Although we are NOT on a real train, all the plays have a train setting, within a background of Kansas City history. Performances are held in some of your favorite area restaurants. The Mystery Train players will also perform for private parties and special engagements. Ask about group rates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Just the FAQ's Ma'am!

How does it work?- This is an interactive style of theater.  Everyone in the audience gets involved in some way.  A few people will be chosen to become characters in the crime.  Everyone is expected to play detective.  At the end of the evening, we will give a prize to the person who figures out the mystery correctly.
What do tickets include?- A four-course dinner, the show, taxes and your food servers’ gratuity.
Where is it?  What is seating like? We perform in a private dining room in a restaurant or banquet venue.  We are not on a real train, but we set the room up as if it were a dining car on a train, so as you enter, you become a passenger on the train and are sitting in the middle of the action!  There is no such thing as a bad seat on the Train.
Do I have to participate? If you’re more the ‘armchair detective’ type who just wants to watch and turn in your answer at the end, that’s fine.  You can get involved at whatever level you are comfortable with.  We give you some funny money, in case you need to bribe your suspects for more information.
Is there a minimum age?  Our shows are written for an adult audience -- 13 years and up, but we keep it pretty clean and fun (as much as murder can be, that is!)  It is not really suited to smaller children—too much history, a very long evening, and no children’s menus.  Teenagers love us because it’s set up as a live-action role playing game.
What do you serve for the meal?  Our complete menus are posted.  You have a choice on the entrée which needs to be selected in advance.  We can arrange to accommodate dietary restrictions or allergies, but only if we are notified in advance.
How long is the show? About 3 ½  hours.  We start seating at 6:30 pm and usually the show ends about 10 pm.  We alternate scenes of the play with courses of your dinner, so you have time to deliberate your clues, and also time to listen carefully for the information about the mystery.
Is there a dress code?  No, not really.  Nice, casual clothes are fine.  You may see a little of everything in our audience, though.  Some people like to dress up for a mystery evening.  Some people even dress for the time period of the play.
Do you recognize special occasions?  Certainly!  Let us know what you’re celebrating.  We would love to share it with the whole Train!
Where do I park? At the Crowne Plaza Hotel, there is valet parking, street parking or paid parking in the Barney Allis Garage.
Do you do private parties?  Do you offer group rates?  Yes!  We can do a private party with a minimum of 25 people.  Please call for a price quote and availability.  816-813-9654  Group rates start with 10 people.  There is an additional discount for groups over 30 people.
If several of my friends want to come, but we’re all buying our tickets separately, can we still sit together? Just let us know that in advance please!  If you get the first reservation in, tell your friends to mention your name when they book their tickets and we’ll make sure you’re all seated together.
How far in advance should I buy my tickets? We don’t mind selling last minute tickets, of course, but it can be risky to wait that long.  We usually fill up. You can save money if you plan ahead--one week prior is when the early order discount expires.
What is the cancellation/refund policy?  Our tickets are non-refundable.  However, if you can give us 24 hours notice, we can let you reschedule for another date.
